El mapeo sistemático muestra la necesidad de aumentar la investigación socioecológica en la palma de aceite

Resumen

Durante el último siglo, la palma de aceite pasó de ser un cultivo de subsistencia en África Occidental a convertirse en un importante producto agrícola mundial, con importantes repercusiones en la biodiversidad, el medio ambiente, la sociedad y los medios de subsistencia. Aunque la industria de la palma de aceite contribuye a las economías locales y nacionales en los trópicos, existen preocupaciones importantes sobre los efectos negativos del cultivo en la biodiversidad y el funcionamiento del ecosistema, así como en las comunidades locales y los agricultores. Existe una creciente conciencia de la necesidad de gestionar los paisajes agrícolas de manera más sostenible y la importancia de la investigación ecológica, social e interdisciplinaria para esto. Con el fin de comprender el estado actual de la investigación sobre la palma de aceite en estas áreas, llevamos a cabo un ejercicio de mapeo sistemático para cuantificar la investigación social, ecológica e interdisciplinaria socioecológica sobre el cultivo de la palma de aceite, evaluar las tendencias en la investigación e identificar brechas de conocimiento prioritarias en la literatura. La literatura se buscó utilizando elementos de reporte seleccionados adaptados en revisiones sistemáticas, metaanálisis y protocolos de colaboración para la evidencia ambiental. Se revisaron 4.959 publicaciones sobre los efectos ecológicos, sociales y socioecológicos del cultivo de la palma de aceite. Cada una se clasificó de acuerdo con el contexto del estudio (la ubicación y el tipo del sitio del estudio), los comparativos (el tipo de comparación que realiza el estudio), la intervención (la acción o decisión potencial que se está estudiando) y el resultado (los efectos de la intervención en la población). Esto dio como resultado 443 artículos clasificados, que luego se analizaron con más detalle para identificar la coocurrencia de diferentes focos de investigación entre las disciplinas y en la investigación socioecológica.
